Where is the best place to meditate on the existence of an all powerful God? For me, that place is the ocean.
Jack and I spent last week in Ocean City, Maryland, with my sister and her husband. This annual trek to the water’s edge in early September has become a tradition for us. September at the beach has ruined me for summer vacations there with its crowds and higher prices.
Last week we enjoyed gorgeous sunny weather every day. I spent hours at the beach each day reading books on my Kindle, talking, napping, and thinking.
The things I love most about the ocean are its power, its constant motion, and its predictable timetable. All of these things testify to me of God and His creative power, His attention to detail, and His undeniable existence. If I ever doubted God, I would need simply to stand at the shoreline of the ocean to have my faith in Him restored.
I don’t have enough faith to believe that an ocean could come into existence and continue its tidal patterns without God anymore than I believe that my Kindle e-reader could fall into my lap loaded with all of my favorite books by mere chance. If a Kindle requires a creator does not an ocean, too?
I forgot to mention that my absolute favorite thing about the ocean is it’s ability to make me feel small.
That’s Jack and me standing at the ocean’s edge. In the words of my sister, who so kindly took this picture from our condominium balcony, we look like piss ants standing there! She’s right. She wanted to zoom in for a better shot of us, but that’s not the picture that I wanted this time. I wanted to be small, and we are.
What a wonderful week we enjoyed at the beach! How great is our God who fashioned this whole earth, including the oceans, from nothing! And He cares for me.
